As part of their mission to remember and help veterans, the Harvey F. Eckhoff VFW Post 7674 Auxiliary donated $2,000 on June 17 to the Flying Needle Quilt Guild’s (FNQG) Quilts of Valor Foundation’s (QOVF) to help fund their continued success in honoring veterans.

Auxiliary President Betty Riker presented the check at Post 7674’s monthly meeting to guild president Kerry Kastl and Barbi Ouellette, FNQG’s QOVF coordinator. Riker said, “Because of their pledge and dedication to caring for veterans and active-duty military impacted by war, VFW Post 7674 Auxiliary is proud and honored to be able to donate these funds to the Flying Needles Quilt Group’s Quilts of Valor mission.”

In thanking the VFW and Auxiliary, Kastl said, “On behalf of the Flying Needles Quilt Guild, we were deeply touched by the generosity of the VFW Auxiliary’s $2,000 donation to our Quilts of Valor fund. It was truly a surprise and gratefully accepted. This money will be used over the next year to purchase the necessary supplies that go into making a Quilt of Valor. It is an honor to make these quilts to present to our veterans for their tremendous service to our country.”

Ouellette and Kastl shared samples of two QOVs with those at the presentation helped by Auxiliary members Kendra Beasley, Lois Garrett, and Betty Riker. Ouellete explained what these special awards mean both to the creators as well as the recipients. The guild strongly believes that “Quilts = Healing.”

“We appreciate those who take the time and thought to honor and show appreciation for the sacrifices that service members make to ensure our freedom,” said VFW Commander Kevin Thurman.

You can read about a recent (June 11) QOVF award presentation whereby six area veterans were awarded with Quilts of Valor from FNQG at a special ceremony held the Air Force Armament Museum Eglin Air Force Base.
